Feb. 21, 2009
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – The Hoosiers had a strong showing, but fell to the #20 Alabama Crimson Tide, 4-3. Sophomore Lachlan Ferguson put up the biggest win of the day, taking down #86 Mathieu Thibaudeau at the #1 singles flight. Indiana dropped the doubles point, but nearly recorded the comeback win, taking three of the six singles matches.
A tight battle the whole way through, three out of six singles matches took three sets. Ferguson only needed two sets to take down Thibaudeau, as he won the first 6-4 and the second 7-6 with a tiebreaker score of 7-4.
Sophomore Santiago Gruter had a tough first set, losing after leading 5-3. He battled back to win the second set in a tie breaker, in which he won the last five points for an 8-6 win. Then in the third set, Gruter dominated, winning 6-2.
Also winning for the Hoosiers was freshman Will Kendall. Kendall took control of his match from the word go, winning 6-3, 6-1.
The Hoosiers return to action on March 1, when they host a doubleheader with Southern Illinois and Butler. The action is slated for an 11:30 a.m. ET start. For complete coverage of Indiana tennis, stay tuned to www.IUHoosiers.com.
