Hoosiers Fall To No. 2 Ohio State
March 3, 2007
COLUMBUS, Ohio- The Indiana men's tennis team opened its Big Ten Conference schedule with a 6-1 loss to No. 2 Ohio State.
Indiana (8-4, 0-1 Big Ten), ranked at No. 68 by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) had two victories on the day. At No. 1 doubles, junior Dara McLoughlin and senior David Bubenicek defeated 60th-ranked Drew Eberly and Justin Kronauge, 8-7. In singles action, sophomore Mak Kendall earned a 6-3, 1-6, 10-8 win over Ty Schaub at No. 6.
"It was a good win for us at No. 1 doubles," head coach Ken Hydinger said. "David stepped up and went to a new level for us today. He played well, his movement across the court was good and he served well. Dara was really pounding the ball. They played a full game and played it well. They kept their composure and beat them in the end really good.
"It was also a good win for Mak at No. 6 singles, he let up in the second set before coming back to win. We hung in there in some of our positions in singles, but they could hang in the point longer than we could. We would have liked to have Thomas (Richter) at No. 3 against them, that would have been a good match-up. We'll get home and keep working on getting stronger as the season goes on."
Five of Ohio State's (12-1, 1-0 Big Ten) singles players are ranked in the top 50, while all three of their doubles teams are ranked.
The Hoosiers return travel to Clemson, S.C., on March 10 to play a pair of matches against South Alabama and Clemson.
