Hoosiers Get Past Michigan State, 4-3
March 29, 2008
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The #44 Indiana University men's tennis team improved to 12-4 overall and 2-1 in Big Ten play with a 4-3 win at #70 Michigan State on Saturday. Indiana seized the first four team points of the match to clinch the team victory before dropping three third-set, 10-point tiebreakers.
The doubles competition was very tight as each match extended beyond the standard eight-game pro-set. At first doubles, Indiana's Phillip Eilers and Lachlan Ferguson topped Billy Garnder and Alex Forger, the 59th-ranked doubles tandem in the country, by a score of 9-7. Peter Antons and Santiago Gruter then captured their 20th win together this season with a 9-8 triumph in the No. 3 doubles position, their 11 victory in 12 dual matches played thus far. The No. 2 doubles match ended the same way, a 9-8 win for the Hoosiers' Dara McLoughlin and Thomas Richter.
Indiana rode the momentum into the singles competition, winning the first set in all six matches. Ferguson, McCarthy and McLoughlin each completed a straight-set win by taking their second set as well. Those three wins assured the Cream and Crimson a victory with the 4-0 advantage.
Michigan State did not let up, however, forcing a third set in the other three contests. With the team results already determined, each third set was to be determined by a single 10-point tiebreaker. Richter narrowly missed out on defeating a ranked opponent, falling to #96 Nick Rinks in the third set. The Spartans were able to win final two tiebreakers as well for the 4-3 final score.
No. 1- #96 Nick Rinks (MSU) def. Thomas Richter (IU), 4-6, 7-6, 1-0
