Langer Takes Down Ranked Foe, Illini Prevail
March 31, 2009
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – The #12 Illinois men’s tennis team came to town and proved to have too much fire power for a young Hoosiers team. Freshman Jeremy Langer scored IU’s only win on the day taking down a ranked player, posting the lone Indiana point in a 6-1 loss.
Langer got his first career win over a ranked foe, defeating #42 Roy Kalmanovich at number three singles. Langer jumped out to an early lead and carried the first set 6-3. He broke Kalmanovich’s serve twice to open the second set 3-0 and went on to take the set 6-4.
Illinois took all three doubles matches for the doubles point, and the Illini won the other five singles bouts. Sophomores Lachlan Ferguson and Santiago Gruter both fell to ranked foes, but neither went down without a fight. Ferguson made the second set a difficult one for #39 Dennis Nevolo, forcing a set tiebreaker which went to Nevolo 8-6. Gruter did the same forcing a tiebreaker in the first set, which he dropped 8-6.
Indiana returns to action on Friday, April 3, when they visit the Minnesota Golden Gophers. For complete coverage of Indiana tennis, stay tuned to IUHoosiers.com.
