BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Indiana men's tennis (13-10, 4-2) took a 7-0 victory over Iowa (7-9, 0-5) on Saturday. The Hoosiers took the doubles point and never looked back, winning all six singles matches.
Indiana got an 8-4 victory from Josh MacTaggart and Daniel Bednarczyk at number two doubles and an 8-5 victory from Dimitrije Tasic and Chris Essick at number three doubles to clinch the point. The number one doubles match was a push, as the match was abandoned with the score tied at 8-8 after the doubles point was decided.
In singles, the top four singles players on the IU roster set the tone early for the Hoosiers. Sam Monette won 6-1, 6-1 over Jonas Dierckx at number one, and MacTaggart defeated Garret Dunn 6-2, 6-1 at number two. Next up was Isade Juneau taking a 6-2, 6-3 win over Matt Hagan at number three, and then Tasic knocked off Juan Estenssoro 6-2, 6-0 at number four.
That left the team score decided at 5-0, but two good matches still on the court. Essick won the first set in his number six match 7-5, but Andres Estenssoro rallied to win the second 6-4. In a 10-point third-set tiebreaker, Essick broke two consecutive Estenssoro serves to lead 9-6. Estenssoro retaliated to close the gap to 9-8, but Essick prevailed on his third match point to take a 7-5, 4-6, 1-0 (8) victory.
At number five, Bednarczyk won a tight first set, 7-6, before controlling the second set to win 6-3 to close out the IU sweep.
