Hoosiers Advance in Big Ten Tournament
April 24, 2008
IOWA CITY, Iowa - The #6-seeded Indiana University men's tennis team advanced to the second round of the Big Ten Tournament on Thursday with a 4-0 sweep over No. 11 seed Northwestern. The Hoosiers are scheduled to play again on Friday versus the third-seeded Fighting Illini of Illinois at 3 p.m. eastern time.
Live results will be available for Friday's match via the men's tennis schedule page.
Doubles competition featured a newly ranked doubles team in IU's Phillip Eilers and Lachlan Ferguson. They entered the ITA's national rankings this week, slotted as the 39th-ranked doubles team in the country. The Hoosier tandem did not finish their match on Thursday, however, as their Hoosier teammates in the second and third doubles contests guaranteed the team doubles points with 8-5 wins. Eilers and Ferguson were leading 7-5 when their match was halted in order to begin singles play.
The No. 2 doubles team of Dara McLoughlin and Thomas Richter inflated their current doubles winning streak, extending it to 11 matches of length with their victory over Peter Rispoli and David Seyferth. In the third doubles flight, Peter Antons and Santiago Gruter got back on track by notching their 21st win of the season as doubles partners.
Singles play was all Indiana early on as each Hoosier won his first set. McLoughlin made quick work of his opponent at No. 2 singles, rolling to a 6-2, 6-1 win. Next to finish was McLoughlin's doubles partner and fellow senior, Richter, who put IU ahead 3-0, defeating Marc Dwyer, 6-3, 6-3. Ferguson then completed the team sweep, surrendering just three games to Northwestern's Peter Rispoli in a 6-2, 6-1 triumph.
Senior Michael McCarthy had an interesting match-up at No. 5 singles, facing his younger brother, Andrew McCarthy. Indiana's McCarthy brother (Mike) dominated the 6-2 first set, but the Wildcat's McCarthy (Andrew) retaliated with a 6-3 winner of his own to force a third frame. The McCarthy Brother Bash will have to wait until later though as the match ended following Ferguson's clinching fourth team point. Eilers and Gruter also did not finish.
