Oct. 14, 2007
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Indiana University men's tennis players Peter Antons and Santiago Gruter captured the Flight "A" doubles championship Sunday afternoon at the University of Louisville Invitational. The tandem won four consecutive matches over the weekend to accomplish the feat.
"They did a great job representing Indiana tennis," said Assistant Coach Scott Linn. "They played very well as a team and worked well together. When things got tough, they just got better."
Antons and Gruter's first round match resulted in an 8-1 win over James O'Connell and Brad Roby from Dayton. They then began Saturday with an 8-5 win over Cleveland State's team of Ryan Hamning and Phil Orno in the second round. Next up was an 8-6 semifinal victory over Stephan Bruwer and Andrey Yesipov from the University of Tennessee-Martin.
The doubles finals match was to be played on Sunday as Antons and Gruter took on Xavier's Chris Herrlinger and Doug Matthews. However, one of the Musketeers became ill and they had to forfeit the championship to the Hoosiers. Antons and Gruter did play a practice match against a different Xavier doubles, however, and earned the win.
Both Antons and Gruter won their first two singles matches on Friday, competing in the "A" singles flight. They were both defeated in the quarterfinals on Saturday, however. Antons suffered a 6-4, 6-2 loss to Alejandro Calligari (Louisville) while Gruter fell to Luka Marinkovic (Illinois State) by the same score.
