ANN ARBOR, Mich. - Sophomore Michael McCarthy moved on to the second round of the 2005 Wilson/Intercollegiate Tennis Association Midwest Regional Championships 64-player qualifying draw at Varsity Tennis Center on Thursday. The Cincinnati native rolled past Craig Smith of Wright State in straight sets, 6-1, 6-4.

With the victory, McCarthy, the 11th seed in the qualifying bracket, improved to 3-2 on the season. The top eight finishers from the qualifying bracket advance to the main singles draw. McCarthy is two victories shy of qualifying for the main draw, where he would join four other Hoosier players. He will continue his quest on Friday, Oct. 21, against Brandon Davis of Illinois, who was a 6-3, 6-4 win over Minnesota's Sion Wilkins.

Last season, McCarthy advanced to the Round of 16 in the main draw of the regional singles tournament. He picked up three victories in the qualifying tournament a season ago to earn a spot in the main draw. From there, he won his opening two matches of the main draw to advance to the Round of 16.

The qualifying tournament concludes on Friday, with both the main singles and main doubles draws getting underway on Saturday, Oct. 22. The Hoosiers already have four players and a trio of doubles teams in the main draws.

The team of seniors Neil Kenner and Dmytro Ishtuganov is seeded 12th in the main doubles draw. The Hoosier tandem is slated to face Paul Glendenning and Andy Lockhart of Illinois-Chicago in the opening round. The IU duo of freshman Peter Antons and junior David Bubenicek will face a tough task in the 15th-seeded team of D.J. Geatz and Andres Osario of Minnesota. Indiana's sophomore team of Dara McLoughlin and McCarthy also will face a difficult challenge in the fifth-seeded twosome of Bryan Koniecko and Ross Wilson from Ohio State.

On the singles side, Kenner will open with the 12th-seeded Brett Helgeson of Notre Dame. Helgeson is ranked 108th in the country according to the ITA preseason rankings. Ishtuganov will challenge third-seeded Matko Maravic of Michigan, who also is ranked 42nd nationally in the preseason rankings. McLoughlin drew the 15th seed Marc Spicijaric of Illinois, and Bubenicek will face Jose Orozco of Western Michigan, who is the No. 8 seed. Spicijaric is ranked 115th in the nation in the preseason ITA poll.
