MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. - Junior Michael McCarthy and senior David Bubenicek each won their first singles matches of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's (ITA) Midwest Region Tournament, while senior Arnaud Roussel reached the finals of the Hoosier Invitational on Saturday, Oct. 21.

In addition, Bubenicek and junior Dara McLoughlin advanced to the round of 16 in the doubles draw at the ITA Regional, defeating Notre Dame's Santiago Montoya and Irackli Akhvlediani 8-2.

McCarthy defeated Mikey Kantar of Minnesota in three sets, 4-6, 6-2, 7-6. Bubenicek earned a 6-4, 6-4 victory over Michigan's Andrew Mazlin. Both move on to the round of 32.

McLoughlin fell in his lone singles contest of the day, to Andres Osario of Minnesota, 3-6, 6-2, 6-3.

Head coach Ken Hydinger was pleased with the team's performance at the regional tournament.

"David (Bubenicek) played a good match," Hydinger said. "He started a little slow, but finished strong against a dangerous player. Mike (McCarthy) was up and down in his match, but he came through when he had to and had a good, tough finish under pressure. It was disappointing that Dara (McLoughlin) fell in his match, he was really rolling in the second set and just wasn't able to keep his opponent under control. Doubles also played well. We beat them convincingly, and it was a well-played match. It was a good day, and we're looking forward to some good matches tomorrow."

Back in Bloomington at the Hoosier Invitational, Roussel earned a 2-6, 6-2, 6-4 victory over Gian Hodgson from Wisconsin. He then defeated Michael Dierberger, also from Wisconsin, 6-2, 6-4, to advance to the finals. Roussel will face Wisconsin's Michael Muskievicz in the finals on Sunday.

Other players who won singles matches on the day were sophomores Mak Kendall and Peter Antons. Kendall won, 6-0, ret. over Western Kentucky's Matt Miller. Antons defeated Louisville's Ben Clos, 6-3, 6-1.

In doubles action, the duo of Roussell and Antons lost in the finals, 8-4, to Muskievicz and Dierberger of Wisconsin. Kendall and freshman Paul Boskovich teamed up to defeat Western Kentucky's Scott Patterson and David Bowman, 8-4.

Complete results will be posted on at the end of each day.
