Kenner, Ishtuganov Advance to Doubles' Quarterfinals
Oct. 23, 2005
ANN ARBOR, Mich. - The Indiana senior duo of Neil Kenner and Dmytro Ishtuganov moved on to the quarterfinals of the Wilson/Intercollegiate Tennis Association Midwest Regional Championships on Sunday. The 12th-seeded tandem picked up a pair of victories to move on to Monday's round of eight against the top-seeded team of Jeremy Clark and Jakob Gustafssen from Louisville.
"Neil and Dmytro have played solid doubles," Indiana head men's tennis coach Ken Hydinger said. "They are playing the No. 1 seed tomorrow, and it should be a very competitor match. They have played better as the tournament has gone on. Dmytro has had real good touch on his shots, and Neil has really been ready to play. It is still early in the year, but it is good experience for them to be in the quarterfinals."
After picking up a first round victory on Friday, the Hoosier pair defeated Nic Edlefsen and Sion Wilkins of Minnesota, 8-4, to advance to the Round of 16. For the second time this season, Kenner and Ishtuganov defeated Adam Monich and Nick Ricks of Michigan State, 8-3. They had beaten the Spartan pair, 9-7, on Sept. 24 at the Cincinnati Collegiate Invitational. With the wins, Kenner and Ishtuganov improve to 5-2 on the year.
The task against Clark and Gustafssen will be a daunting one. The Cardinal tandem is not only the top seed in the tournament, but also is ranked 19th nationally in preseason poll. While they haven't faced the Louisville pair, Kenner and Ishtuganov did play against Clark and Louisville teammate Stefan Naughton at the season-opening Cincinnati Collegiate Invitational. The Hoosier tandem defeated Clark and Naughton, 8-3, on Sept. 25.
The IU group of freshman Peter Antons and David Bubenicek advanced to the Round of 16 before bowing out of the main draw. The duo defeated Praboujo and Prakoso Imanuel of Chicago, 8-6, before dropping an 8-2 affair to the eighth-seeded team of Chris Klingemann and Devin Mullings from Ohio State.
The quarterfinals and semifinals of the Wilson/ITA Midwest Regional Championships main doubles draw will be played on Monday starting at 8 a.m. The finals are slated for Tuesday, Oct. 25. The doubles champion from the event will earn spots in the 2005 ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships, which Ohio State will host Nov. 3-6.
