EAST LANSING, Mich. - Freshman Josh MacTaggart and junior Santiago Gruter have advanced to the semifinals of the Big Ten Singles Championships. The two Hoosiers each won two matches on Sunday to advance to the conference semifinals. If each player were to win their Monday final, they would meet for the conference crown. Sophomore Will Kendall also advanced to the semifinal of the backdraw.
MacTaggart won his first match of the day, defeating Abe Souza of Illinois in the round of 16. MacTaggart won the first set 6-1. Souza battled back to take a tight second set (5-7). MacTaggart regained control for a 6-1 win in the third.
That win brought on a quarterfinal matchup with Mike Sroczynski of Michigan. After winning a tiebreaker in the first set, MacTaggart shut down the Illinois player for a 6-1 second set victory. MacTaggart is matched up in the semifinal with Jason Lee of Penn State. The match will be a battle of two seeded players, as MacTaggart is the third seed and Lee is the 15th seed.
Gruter opened the day with a 6-3, 6-3 victory over Billy Bertha of Wisconsin. Gruter then defeated Eddie Bourchier of Penn State in the quarterfinals by the same score of 6-3, 6-3. Gruter will face off with Chris Madden of Michigan in the semifinals. Madden is the sixth seed in the tournament, and Gruter is the fourth seed.
Kendall won four back draw matches to advance to the backdraw semifinal. He will square off with Alex Sanborn of Northwestern for the right to play in the backdraw final.
