EAST LANSING, Mich. - The Indiana men's tennis team advanced three players and narrowly missed pushing a fourth into the round of 16 at the Big Ten Indoor Singles Championships on Saturday, Nov. 12, at the Michigan State Tennis Center. Senior Dmytro Ishtuganov, junior David Bubenicek and sophomore Dara McLoughlin each picked up a pair of wins on the day to advance to the round of 16.

"I was happy with the results," Indiana men's tennis coach Ken Hydinger said. "We advanced three guys to the round of 16, and I really thought Neil Kenner was going to make it four for us. He lost a tight match against a seeded player. Overall, I was happy with the way the guys played, but there are still some things that we need to work on."

Ishtuganov, the 13th seed in the tournament, cruised in his opening two matches, winning both in straight sets. He downed Ty Schaub of Ohio State in the opening round, 6-1, 6-1, before disposing of Peter Aarts of Michigan, 6-2, 6-2, in the second. With the victories, Ishtuganov improves to 4-3 on the season. He will battle Minnesota's Andres Osorio in the round of 16. Osorio defeated the second-seeded Christian Tempke of Northwestern in the first round of the tournament.

"Dymtro came out very focused and played consistent tennis," Hydinger said.

The highest seeded Hoosier, Bubenicek also advanced with a pair of wins. The 12th-seeded player in the tournament defeated qualifier Matt Zollman of Purdue, 6-1, 6-3, in the first round. In the second round, Bubenicek fell behind 4-1 in the opening set before forcing a tiebreaker and winning 7-6 (2). He claimed the match with an unblemished second-set win, 6-0. Bubenicek ran his team-leading record of 6-1 with the victories.

McLoughlin came from behind in his second-round match against Matt Christian of Northwestern to move on. The Dublin, Ireland, native dropped the first set, 6-3, but rallied to win the final two, 6-2, 6-1. He picked up a straight-set victory over Chaitu Malempati of Iowa, 6-3, 6-2, in his first match of the day. McLoughlin evened his record at 4-4 on the season with the pair of wins. He will face Brenden Lynch of Penn State on Sunday.

Senior Neil Kenner and sophomore Michael McCarthy missed out on round of 16 spots after dropping their second-round matches. Each player will take part in the Big Ten Indoor Championships Consolation Bracket, which begins on Sunday, Nov. 13.

Kenner dropped a difficult three-set affair in his second-round match against 11th-seeded Raoul Schwark of Minnesota. After dropping the first set, 6-3, Kenner dominated Schwark in the second, 6-1, to event the match. The Golden Gopher would claim the third and deciding set, 6-4. The Hoosier senior opened the day with a quick, 6-1, 6-1, win over Steve Peretz of Michigan. Kenner, 4-3 on the season, will meet Bart Van Monsjou of Iowa in the second round of the consolation bracket.

For the second time this fall, McCarthy defeated Lachezar Kasarov of Wisconsin, this time, 6-3, 6-4. Earlier this season, he had defeated the Badger to earn one of eight qualifying spots in the ITA Midwest Regionals on Oct. 21. McCarthy dropped a 6-4, 6-3 contest to sixth-seeded Ross Wilson of Ohio State in the second round. The Cincinnati native is 6-4 on the season and will face Mikey Kantar of Minnesota in the consolation bracket.

Freshman Peter Antons picked up the second win of his Hoosier singles career in the first round of the consolation bracket. After falling to Jarred Leibner of Purdue in the main draw, the Duxbury, Mass., native rallied for a three-set victory over Brett Taylor of Iowa in the first round of the consolation bracket. Antons dropped a hotly-contested first set in a tiebreaker, 7-6 (3), but the IU rookie claimed the second and third sets, 6-2, 6-2. He moves on to the second round of the consolation bracket and will play Nic Edlefsen of Minnesota.
