January 10, 2000 Men's Tennis Begins Winter At Big Ten Indoor Singles Championships
ON TAP...The men's tennis team returns to action this weekend as it will take part in the Big Ten Singles Championships from Saturday through Monday. The Championship will take placce in East Lansing, Michigan and consists of players from all the Big Ten schools.
IN THE RANKINGS...In the current rankings the Indiana Hoosiers are ranked 40th by the ITA. In Region IV, the Hoosiers are ranked 5th. Milan Rakvica is currently ranked 84th in the nation and 24th in the Region. In doubles the team of Rakvica and sophomore Rahman Smiley are ranked 47th in the country and 11th in the Region.
FALL PLAY...The Hoosiers played extremely well during the fall tournament season. Milan Rakvica lead the way with a 8-2 singles record. Gabriel Montilla won six matches during the fall, while Ian Arons, Joey Balsiger and Rahman Smiley all picked up five wins. Rakvica and Smiley went 5-3 in doubles. The Hoosiers finished the fall off by sending six players to Madison, Wisconsin from November 5-7 to compete in the ITA Region IV Championships. The doubles team of Milan Rakvica and Rahman Smiley made it the furthest of any Hoosier player or team, as they reached the quarterfinals of the doubles draw. The team of Ian Arons and Ricardo Jordan were defeated in the first round. In singles, Arons and Rakvica each made it to the third round. George McGill and Rahman Smiley each made it to the second round, while Paul Jacobson was defeated in round one. In other fall tournaments, the Hoosiers sent four players to Austin, Texas for the Reebok/ITA All-American Championships. Ian Arons and Milan Rakvica made it past the Pre-Qualifying Round, before losing in the Qualifying Round. At the Tom Fallon Invitational in Notre Dame, Indiana, Montilla reached the finals before losing to Rice's Robert Collins. At the Clemson Fall Invitational, Junior Paul Jacobson won Flight 3, by going 4-0 in the tournament. Rakvica, also went 4-0 in Flight 1. Arons competed in the ITA/Rolex Clay Court Championships in Baltimore, Maryland losing in the first round of pre-qualifying to UNLV's Nenad Zivkovic 9-7.
RECAPPING LAST YEAR...The Hoosiers made a huge jump last year as a team, finishing with a 14-10 overall record, while going 6-5 in the Big Ten and making it to the NCAA Tournament. Ian Arons became the Hoosiers No. 1 player in the beginning of the season and went on to get All-Big Ten First Team honors. George McGill went a perfect 10-0 during Big Ten singles play. Milan Rakvica, went on to win 30 matches in his first year on the team.
COACH KEN HYDINGER...is in his 16th season as the Head Coach of the men's tennis team. He has a overall record of 233-158-1, while going 104-80 in the Big Ten. Coach Hydinger has been a coach at the collegiate level for 21 years, coaching at Southwest Missouri State and Mississippi before coming to Indiana. In his 20 years of coaching he has a record of 299-203-1.
