    Men Begin Winter Season With Big Ten Singles Championships

    On Tap: The Hoosiers will begin the new year this weekend as they travel to Madison, Wisconsin for the Big Ten Singles Championships. The Hoosiers will compete with the other ten teams from the the Big Ten from Saturday January 16th to Monday January 18th.

    Recapping The Fall: The Hoosiers had a strong fall tournament season, led by sophomores Milan Rakvica (9-1 singles, 7-1 doubles), Paul Jacobson (9-1, 7-2), and Ian Arons (5-4, 7-4). Also making solid contributions juniors Gabriel Montilla (5-3, 8-4), George McGill (3-0, 3-1) and Ricardo Jordan (6-2 doubles). Freshman Rahman Smiley made an impressive debut after overcoming an early season injury, finishing with a 7-1 doubles record.

    ITA Region IV Championships: In singles Ian Arons lost to top-ranked Ryan Sacchire of Notre Dame. In doubles the team of Gabriel Montilla and Rahman Smiley lost to the top-seeded team of Cary Franklin and Oliver Freelove from Illinois in the quarterfinals. Ian Arons and Milan Rakvica advanced to the third round before losing to second-seeded team from Illinois, Jeff Laski and Gavin Sontag. The tournament took place from November 6 to November 9, 1998.

    Recapping Last Year: The Hoosiers are trying to bounce back after a disappointing season last year. Playing teams in the top 75 all season long, the Hoosiers ended the season with a 9-15 overall record. In conference play, they with a record of 4-9. They finished the Big Ten Championships in 8th place.

    Head Coach Ken Hydinger... is entering his 15th season as the Head Coach at Indiana University. He has accumulated a 219-148-1 overall record, while he earning a 98-75 Big Ten record. He has been coaching at the collegiate level for 18 years, coaching at Mississippi State and Southwest Missouri State, before coming to Indiana. During his 18 years of coaching he has collecting 285 victories, with 193 losses and one tie.

    Scouting Report: Without a senior on the team this year, the Hoosiers will be looking for leadership from Juniors George McGill and Gabriel Montilla. Montilla finished last year with a 18-19 singles record, while playing at the number 2 position. McGill finished with a 13-10 singles record, and will looked at to contribute more this year. Sophomore Ian Arons lead the Hoosiers in victories last year with 23. In doubles, the team does not have any teams returning from last year. They will look for stability from Montilla and fellow Junior Ricardo Jordan.
