MacTaggart Named Big Ten Player of the Week
Jan. 25, 2011
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Indiana's Josh MacTaggart has been named the Big Ten Men's Tennis Player of the Week for the week of January 16-22, the conference announced. MacTaggart scored a win over a ranked opponent en route to an undefeated weekend and was instrumental in the Hoosiers 2-0 start to the season. MacTaggart is the first Hoosier to win the weekly honor since Thomas Richter in April 2007.
Indiana head coach Randy Bloemendaal said MacTaggart showed how strong of a player he can be for the Hoosier this season with a strong opening weekend.
"Josh has really stepped up his game this year," said Bloemendaal. "We feel that he can be a high-level player for us playing at or near the top of our lineup in singles and doubles. He played very well this week and is very deserving of this honor."
MacTaggart won two singles and two doubles matches over the weekend to help the 46th-ranked Hoosiers to wins over No. 57 North Carolina State and IUPUI on Saturday and earn his first Big Ten Athlete of the Week honor. MacTaggart took down No. 82 Dominic Hodgson of North Carolina State, 6-2, 7-5, before teaming with Stephen Vogl to defeat the Wolfpack's Dave Thomson and Jamie Pulgar, 8-5, in the 5-2 Indiana win. The sophomore then earned a 6-3, 6-4 win over Ivan Mojsejev and paired with Vogl to add another 8-5 doubles win over Mojsejev and Daniel Klingenberg to fuel the Hoosiers to a 7-0 win over IUPUI.
