    Hoosiers Face Tough Competition At O'Charley's Classic

    On Tap: The Hoosiers continue their winter tournament season with the O'Charley's Classic on Saturday and Sunday. The Classic, which takes place in Knoxville, Tennessee, will include the Hoosiers, Tennessee, Wake Forest and William & Mary. The Hoosiers will try and fair better then they did last year at the O'Charley's Classic, when they finished 0-3, with losses to Tennessee, William & Mary and Michigan State.

    Big Ten Singles Championship: The Hoosiers competed in the Big Ten Singles Championships last week from Madison, Wisconsin. They finished with a 3-6 record in the main draw, as all the losses came to top-ranked players. Freshman Rahman Smiley lost to top-seeded and eventual finalist Tom Chicoine of Minnesota 6-4,6-4. Sophomore Ian Arons, lost to 13th-seeded and eventually champion Jason Marshall of Purdue 6-3,6-4. The team fared better in the consolation round finishing 11-6. Junior Gabriel Montilla bounced back after a first round loss, to reach the semifinals of the consolation draw.

    Recapping The Fall: The Hoosiers had a strong fall tournament season, led by sophomores Milan Rakvica (9-1 singles, 7-1 doubles), Paul Jacobson (9-1, 7-2), and Ian Arons (5-4, 7-4). Also making solid contributions juniors Gabriel Montilla (5-3, 8-4), George McGill (3-0, 3-1) and Ricardo Jordan (6-2 doubles). Freshman Rahman Smiley made an impressive debut after overcoming an early season injury, finishing with a 7-1 doubles record.

    Head Coach Ken Hydinger... is entering his 15th season as the Head Coach at Indiana University. He has accumulated a 219-148-1 overall record, while he earning a 98-75 Big Ten record. He has been coaching at the collegiate level for 18 years, coaching at Mississippi State and Southwest Missouri State, before coming to Indiana. During his 18 years of coaching he has collecting 285 victories, with 193 losses and one tie.

    Scouting Report: Without a senior on the team this year, the Hoosiers will be looking for leadership from Juniors George McGill and Gabriel Montilla. Montilla finished last year with a 18-19 singles record, while playing at the number 2 position. McGill finished with a 13-10 singles record, and will looked at to contribute more this year. Sophomore Ian Arons lead the Hoosiers in victories last year with 23. In doubles, the team does not have any teams returning from last year. They will look for stability from Montilla and fellow Junior Ricardo Jordan.

    Looking to the Future: The Hoosiers will next step on the court in two weeks as they will host the Indiana Winter Invitational from Febuary 5 to February 7. They will face Kentucky, Arkansas and Clemson.
