Strong Doubles Play Not Enough For Hoosiers
Knoxville, Tenn.-Despite great play from the three doubles teams, the men's tennis team lost to #12 Tennessee 5-2, today in the first round of The O'Charley's Classic in Knoxville, Tennessee. The Hoosiers doubles teams provide three wins, which earned them one of their two wins on the day.
The Hoosiers doubles teams look good in taking the only doubles point. Gabriel Montilla and Rahman Smiley defeated Chad Copenhaver and Mark Way 9-8(6). Rakvica and Jacobson also went to a tie-breaker where they defeated Mirko Jaovanovic and Paul Podbury 9-8(2). Ian Arons and Ricardo Jordan, playing at the third position, defeated Adam Carey and Peter Handoyo 8-5.
Tennessee took control of singles play, winning five out of the six singles positions. The Hoosiers only win came from Jacobson, who won over Jovanovich 6-7,6-4,7-6. Even though the Hoosiers lost the other five matches, they took three of them to three sets. Arons, playing at the number one position, lost to Way 6-3,5-7,6-3. Montilla lost to the #10 player in the country, Handoyo, 6-7,6-3,6-4. Smiley, was again impressive, dropping a three set match to Casey 6-1,5-6,6-0. George McGill made his return from an injury with a loss to #46-ranked Mark Parsons 6-4,6-3 and Rakvica lost to Podbury 6-4,6-3
The men will continue play tomorrow at the O'Charley's Classic with consolation draw as the will face Wake Forest. Play from Knoxville, Tennessee will begin at 9 o'clock tomorrow morning.
