Bloomington, IN - The men's tennis team completed Day One of the Indiana Winter Invitational today. The Invitational is set up in dual match form, but the results do not have an effect on the season record. The Hoosiers took on players from Arkansas, while the players from Kentucky and North Carolina State competed against each other.
In doubles, the team of Milan Rakvica and Rahman Smiley defeated Bradlee Berry and Chris Campbell 8-6 in Flight 2. In Flight 1, Ian Arons and Gabriel Montilla fell to Henrik Tofft and John Deaton 8-6. In Flight 3, Paul Jacobson and Brendan Storey were defeated by Magnus Kullenberg and Eduardo Pacheco 8-5.
In singles, the Hoosiers split their four matches with Rakvica, Jacobson, Ari Widlansky and Joey Balsiger picking up wins. Rakvica, playing in the Flight 1, defeated Tofft 6-3,6-4. Jacobson was victorious over Pacheco 6-3,7-5 in Flight 4. In Flight 7, Widlansky defeated John Deaton 6-2,3-6,6-2. Balsiger, who is recovering from an injury won a one-set match against Berry 6-1.
Head Coach Ken Hydinger said, "We had some good play and bad play today. Some of guys played hard. We had some of our guys playing negatively and were not as ready to play as I would like to see them play. We have to be fully ready to play when the match starts."
The Hoosiers will continue the Indiana Winter Invitational tomorrow with singles and doubles matches against North Carolina State. Kentucky and Arkansas will go head-to-head. Play will begin tomorrow morning at 9 a.m.
