February 13, 2000 Men's Tennis Remain Undefeated With 6-1 Victory Over Oklahoma
Edmond, Okla. - The #33 Hoosiers (3-0) remained undefeated with a victory over Oklahoma 6-1 today to finish the weekend with a pair of road wins. Indiana started off strong in doubles and never let up, losing only one match on the day.
The Hoosiers began the day by sweeping the doubles matches to pick up the doubles point. At No. 1, Ian Arons and Gabriel Montilla defeated Charlie Roberson and Rick Warren 8-5. #47 Milan Rakvica and Rahman Smiley were victorious in their match over Dusty Beard and Jeremy Dunham 8-5 at No. 2. At No. 3, Paul Jacobson and Ari Widlansky defeated Matt Ogle and Chris Mitchell 8-4.
The Hoosiers dominated singles play taking five out of the six matches. At No. 2, Arons defeated Roberson 7-6,6-3. Gabriel Montilla, playing at No. 3, won his match over Dunham 6-2,6-4. At No. 4, Jacobson extended his winning streak to five matches with a victory over Warren 6-4,6-1. At No. 5, George McGill defeated Julio Martinez 6-4,6-3. At No. 6, Rahman Smiley battled back after a three-set loss yesterday to defeated Tobias Kronlein 4-6,6-4,6-4.
Indiana's only loss came at the No. 1 singles, as Rakvica retired in his match against Beard. At the time he retired he was down a set and tied at 6-6 in the second.
Head Coach Ken Hydinger said, "The win over Oklahoma capped off a good weekend for us. The doubles came out really ready to go. We got into tough situations and came out of it very well."
The Hoosiers will home for two matches next weekend. On Saturday, Indiana will open the Big Ten season with a match against Northwestern at 10 a.m. The men will then face Ball State on Sunday at 3 p.m. Both matches will take place at the Indiana University Tennis Center.
