Fall to No. 57 N.C. State
RALEIGH, N.C. - The No. 70 Indiana men's tennis team lost 5-2 to No. 57 N.C. State on Sunday afternoon in the J.W. Isenhour Tennis Center. With the loss, the Hoosiers drop to 2-4 on the year, while the Wolfpack improves to 10-0.
IU got off to a strong start as it picked up a pair of wins to garner the doubles point. The team of junior John Stone and senior Ryan Recht won at the No. 2 position, 8-4, over senior Conor Taylor and freshman Mason Schermerhorn.
The Hoosiers clinched the point as the freshmen combination of Michael McCarthy and Dara McLoughlin bested junior Val Banda and sophomore Andre Iriarte at the No. 3 spot by the score of 9-8 (5). The duo improved to 4-0 on the spring campaign.
Senior Jakub Praibis and junior Dmytro Ishtuganov lost at the top spot, 8-1, to junior Will Shaw and freshman Nick Cavaday.
Praibis was the lone Indiana player to notch a singles victory, as he upended No. 82 Taylor, 3-6, 7-5, 7-5, at the No. 1 singles position. Praibis is now 5-1 on the spring season at the No. 1 singles spot and 9-5 overall for the year. The Litomerice, Czech Republic, product boasts three victories this spring versus ranked foes.
The Wolfpack won the other five singles matches as Ishtuganov fell at No. 2, 6-1, 6-1 to Cavaday, and Iriarte upended McCarthy at No. 3 (3-6, 6-2, 6-4).
Shaw bested senior Tom Bagnato (6-4, 7-5) at the No. 4 slot, Banada beat sophomore David Bubenicek (3-6, 6-4, 6-4) and sophomore William Noblitt took down McLoughlin (3-6, 6-2, 6-4).
The Hoosiers will return to action on Friday, Feb. 18, when they host No. 40 Louisville at 4 p.m. in the IU Varsity Tennis Center.
