Bloomington, Ind.-The men's tennis team came into the match today looking to upset 33rd-ranked Purdue. It almost happened, as the Hoosiers took the Boilermakers to the final match before losing 4-3.
The Hoosiers lost the doubles point by winning only one of the three matches. Their only win was by Ian Arons and Ricardo Jordan, who beat Cris James and Derek Miller 9-7.
Singles was a different story with the Hoosiers winning three of the six matches. At the No. 1 position, Arons fought through a pulled muscle in his leg to upset 26th-ranked Cris James 6-4,5-7,6-3. George McGill was able to gain a victory over the Big Ten Singles Champion Jason Marshall 6-4,1-6,6-4. At No. 5, Paul Jacobson continued his dominate play with a three set victory over Derek Miller 3-6,6-4,6-4. The Hoosiers just missed the upset as Rahman Smiley lost to Cade Lutz 6-2,6-7,6-4 in the deciding match. Smiley injury his leg with the match tied 3-3 in the third set and was not at 100 percent for the rest of the match.
Coach Ken Hydinger, "We are right there. We didn't get it done. We are young and sometimes you have to knock on the door a few times before you get through. If we keep knocking we will eventually get through."
The Hoosiers will continue with three matches next weekend. They will travel to Muncie, Indiana on Thursday to take on Ball State. On Saturday they will have a doubleheader. They will face Eastern Kentucky at 9 a.m. and Southern Illinois at 6 p.m.
