Men's Tennis Off To 4-0 Start With Win Over Northwestern

Bloomington, IN - The men's tennis team remained undefeated with a 4-3 win over Northwestern today. The win improved the #33 Hoosiers to 4-0, which is their best start since a 4-0 start in 1993.

The Hoosiers captured the doubles point for the fourth time in as many matches. At No. 1, Ian Arons and Gabriel Montilla defeated Brad Erickson and Joost Hol 8-5. After losing at the No. 3 position, the No. 2 team of Milan Rakvica and Rahman Smiley defeated Josh Axler and Jamie Sahara 9-7.

Indiana split the singles matches. At No. 4, George McGill remained undefeated in dual matches with a win over Axler 7-6,6-3. Montilla also remained undefeated with a victory over Jackie Jenkins 4-6,6-3,6-4. After Smiley dropped a close match to Russell Bennett 7-6,7-6 at the No. 6 position, Paul Jacobson clinched the win for the Hoosiers with a victory over Sahara 7-6,4-6,6-3. With the match decided already, the Hoosiers dropped the last two matches in three-sets.

Head Coach Ken Hydinger said, "I am happy to get the win and I thought that we played well. Northwestern has a great amount of talent. We played tentative in the beginning, but we fought our way through it. I think the team has high aspirations for the season and I think that if we think that we should beat someone, then we should jump on them from the start."

The Hoosiers will continue their season tomorrow with a home match against #43 Ball State at 3 p.m. The match will take place at the IU Tennis Center.
