Bloomington, Ind. The Indiana mens tennis team finished its weekend matches with a heartbreaking 4-3 loss to No. 67 Western Michigan Sunday afternoon at the IU Indoor Tennis Center.
With the loss, IU falls to 4-3 on the campaign, while the Broncos improve to 7-2.
It appeared as though the Hoosiers were right on track, as they swept in doubles to get themselves on the board first. At No. 1, Ryan Recht and John Stone continued their successful campaign and improved their overall record to 7-3 after downing Ravi Pathanjali and Jeff French, 8-6. Dmytro Ishtuganov and Jakub Praibis moved to 4-1 with a 9-7 win over Tommy Dennis and Brady Crosby at the No. 2 spot. Finally, Neil Kenner and Ryan McCarthy bounced back from their loss yesterday to overcome Jose Orozco and Dan Grupp in a close 9-8 (7-2) battle.
Things really heated up in the singles competition. At the No. 1 position, Praibis had his six-match winning streak snapped after he fell to Pathanjali, 6-2, 6-2. Kenner and McCarthy were both defeated as well, 6-4, 6-4 and 6-4, 6-3, respectively. With the match tied at three a piece, thanks to wins from Ishtuganov and Bagnato, it all came down to Recht at the No. 2 spot who faced a tough Dennis. In the end, Recht gave it his all, but eventually fell to Dennis, 6-3, 4-6, 6-4, to give the Bronco's their fourth point and the win.
We knew I was going to be a close match, regardless of us winning the doubles right away. This team beat a very tough Wisconsin team, 6-1. said head coach Ken Hydinger. This was an important situation for us. Despite the loss, we kept our composure and that shows some maturity and character.
