BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The No. 62 Indiana men's tennis team won its first Big Ten match of the season, 7-0, over No. 66 Penn State, on Sunday afternoon at the IU Tennis Center. With the win, the Hoosiers improve to 4-7 on the year and 1-1 in league play, while the Nittany Lions fall to 9-3 and 0-1 in conference action.

"This was almost a must win match for us," Indiana head coach Ken Hydinger said. "We had this conference match at home. We didn't want to go down 0-2 in Big Ten play. The guys came back after yesterday's match and responded well. We got an entire team effort."

The Hoosiers won the first doubles match as the freshman duo of Michael McCarthy and Dara McLoughlin bested freshmen Chris Sherman and Michael James by the margin of 8-5 at No. 3. The IU pair, down 4-2 at one time during the match, broke Penn State's serve on three occasions en route to the victory. McLoughlin and McCarthy are now 5-4 overall and the tandem earned their first career Big Ten doubles win.

IU secured the doubles point as the 54th-ranked team of senior Jakub Praibis and junior Dmytro Ishtuganov downed sophomores Bradley Hunter and Ryan Berger, 8-6, at No. 2. Praibis and Ishtuganov broke PSU's serve to take a 4-3 advantage in the match and held their own for the entire contest in winning their 10th match of the year.

Senior Ryan Recht and junior John Stone completed the Indiana doubles sweep with a 9-8 (5) win over juniors Mark Barry and Malcolm Scatliffe at the No. 1 slot.

Praibis pushed the Hoosiers advantage to 2-0 with a 6-3, 6-4 win at the top position over Barry. Praibis is now 9-2 in dual action and 13-6 on the year.

Junior Neil Kenner and freshman Michael McCarthy clinched the match for the Hoosiers with wins at No. 4 and 5, respectively. Kenner downed Hunter, 6-3, 6-3, and McCarthy upended James 3-6, 6-2, 6-2.

Sophomore David Bubenicek improved to 8-1 in dual contests with a win over Berger, 6-4, 6-4, at the No. 3 position. Stone was victorious at No. 6, 6-7 (3), 6-2, 6-2, over freshman James Dwyer.

Recht closed out the Indiana sweep with a 6-4, 4-6, 6-2 conquest of Scatliffe at No. 2.

The Hoosiers will return to the courts on Wednesday, March 9, for a showdown at No. 12 Kentucky. The match will be played at the Hilary J. Boone Varsity Tennis Center and is slated to begin at 2 p.m.
