    #35 Hoosiers Drop Close Match TO #6 Illinois 5-2

    Bloomington, Ind. - The 35th-ranked Hoosiers (9-4, 1-2 Big Ten) lost a close match today to 6th-ranked Illinois 5-2.

    The Hoosiers opened the day by losing three close doubles matches. At No. 1, 47th-ranked Ian Arons and Milan Rakvica lost to 12th-ranked Jeff Laski and Jamal Parker 8-5. At No. 2, George McGill and Milan Rakvica were defeated by Cary Franklin and Graydon Oliver 8-6. At No. 3, Paul Jacobson and Rahman Smiley lost to Mike Kosta and Matt Snyder 8-6.

    In singles, the Hoosiers opened by splitting the first four matches. The Hoosiers picked up wins from McGill and Smiley. McGill defeated Parker 6-4,6-4 at No. 4. At No. 6, Smiley battled back from a set down to defeated Snyder 3-6,6-3,6-1. At No. 3, Montilla lost his match to Oliver 6-4,6-2. Jacobson, playing at the No. 5 position, dropped his match to Kosta 7-5,6-4.

    With Illinois up 3-2, the final two matches came down to a third set. The Hoosiers were unable to win either match. At No. 2, Arons lost to Laski 7-5,4-6,6-1. The match between Rakvica and Franklin went to a third-set tiebreaker, before Franklin won 3-6,6-0,7-6.

    Head Coach Ken Hydinger said, "We were ready to play. It was a good match that went Illinois way. It was close all the way through and the guys fought hard. This match maybe happening again in a month in the same spot (at the Big Ten Tennis Championships). We have to go on the road next week and get some wins to get a good seed in the tournament."

    The Hoosiers will be on the road next weekend for matches against Iowa and Wisconsin. Indiana will face Iowa at 11:30 a.m. next Saturday and then travel for a match against Wisconsin at noon on Sunday.
