IU Downs Wisconsin, 5-2
BLOOMINGTON, Ind.--After dropping the doubles point for the first part of Saturday's match, the No. 72 Indiana men's tennis team bounced back to capture a 5-2 victory over the Wisconsin Badgers at the IU Outdoor Tennis Courts.
With the win, the Hoosiers move to .500 on the season at 7-7 and 1-1 in the Big Ten, while the Badgers slip to 5-7 overall and 0-2 in conference play.
IU founds itself down early after dropping the doubles points. Jakub Praibis and Dmytro Ishtuganov were the only Hoosier tandem to pick up a victory after they downed Scott Green and Alex Conti, 8-4. The other two pairs, John Stone/Ryan Recht and Ryan McCarthy/Neil Kenner lost to 33rd-ranked David Hippee/ Alexander Kasarov, 8-2 and Ward Bortz/Jordan Raemisch, 8-6, respectively.
The Hoosiers squad then proceeded to win five of its six singles matches to claim the win. Freshman David Bubenicek returned to the Indiana line-up after taking two months off due to an injury. The time off did not seem to affect the Kromeriz, Czech Republic, native as he went on to win his match vs. Conti, 4-6, 6-2, 6-3. IU got wins from Praibis, Kenner, Bagnato and Stone as well.
Head Coach Ken Hydinger attributed today's win over the Badgers to having everyone on the team in good health for the first time this season. All eight Hoosiers saw action and contributed to the victory.
"It feels good to get this win," said Hydinger. "I saw a lot of good things from our guys. Neil had lost to his guy (David Hippee) before and he told me he was determined to win. He went out there today and got the job done. Tom's consistency really showed today, and I was really pleased with David's performance, seeing he hadn't performed since the end of January."
Indiana is back in action on April 3-4 when they hit the road for two Big Ten matches. The Hoosiers square off with No. 18 Ohio State on Saturday, April 3 at Noon in Columbus and then face No. 70 Penn State on Sunday, April 4, in College Station at Noon.
