Hoosiers drop 1st Big Ten match of season to Michigan

Bloomington, IN--Indiana's men's tennis team dropped its first Big Ten match of the season today, losing 6-1 to 52nd ranked Michigan. The Hoosiers (7-6 overall, 2-1 Big Ten) played solidly in many of the matches, but couldnUt capture the close points in the loss.

Michigan took the 1-0 advantage after sweeping the doubles positions and never looked back. Derek Pope and Gabriel Montilla played in a hard-fought 8-6 match, but couldn't overcome the talented duo of Brooke Blain and Arvid Swan.

In singles, the Hoosiers lone winner was Paul Jacobson, who stepped in at the last minute in the six spot, and defeated Jake Raiton, 6-1,7-5. RPaul stepped in on 7 minutes notice and got the job done for us today,S said Hoosier head coach Ken Hydinger.

Montilla, playing at number one after a last second decison forced Derek Pope to the sidelines, played a tough match against David Paradzik, but fell short, 6-4,2-6,7-5. George McGill, who has played well since recovering from early season injuries, also forced his oppenent into the third set, dropping a 6-4,4-6,6-3 decision. The other four matches all went to the tie-break in the second set before the Wolverine players finally overcame the Hoosiers.

"I think we competed excellently today," said Hydinger. "We gave ourselves some chances to win, but couldn't pull it out. The whole team, up and down the line-up, fought really well today. The way we played today is real promising becuase it showed me what this team can develop into being."

The Hoosiers are back in action next weekend as they host Northwestern and Wisconsin. The Wildcats, one of the conferences top teams, come calling on Saturday, and Indiana will entertain the Badgers on Sunday. Both matrches are slated for 12:00 p.m. starts.
