Hoosiers drop Big Ten match to Wisconsin

Bloomington, IN--Indiana continued to play tough but come up short on Sunday, dropping a 5-2 decision to the Wisconsin Badgers. The Hoosiers played tough all day, but couldn't pull out the close matches in falling to 7-8 on the season (2-3 Big Ten). Wisconsin, ranked 58th nationally, improved to 3-2 in the Big Ten and 11-5 overall with the victory.

Indiana came out strong in doubles, which has been the Hoosiers strong point all season, but couldn't win the close points. The lone victory for Indiana came at the number two position where Scott Lippitt and Andrew Held teamed up for their 21st victory of the season. They defeated John Thompsen and David Chang 8-6 to earn the win.

In singles, the Hoosiers were able to manage two victories and almost hung on for another pair, but the Badgers prevailed in the end. Derek Pope won a classic tennis match at number one, defeating highly talented Mark Loughrin in a 3-6,7-6,6-4 battle. The duo battled back and forth all afternoon before Pope was finally able to overcome the odds and pull out the hard-fought victory.

Junior Scott Lippitt was the other Hoosier winner, defeating David Chang in straight sets, 6-3,6-1, at number two. Lippitt's first Big Ten win of the seaon ups his overall record to 18-14. In another classic tennis match, Andrew Held played Jeff Malik extremely tough, winning the first set 7-5, but couldn't hold on in the final two sets, losing 6-2,6-3.

"I think we had some guys who really fought hard today," said head coach Ken Hydinger. "I've got to give Wisconsin all the credit in the world for pulling out a tough match. It's too bad that we lost some close matches because we had a good opportunity to pull out a win today."

The Hoosiers are back in action next weekend as they hit the road for a pair of tough conference matches. Indiana heads north to arch-rival Purdue on Friday and then travels to Champaign for a court date with 3rd ranked Illinois on Sunday.
