BLOOMINGTON, Ind.-- No. 68 Indiana notched its fourth ranked victory of the season when it knocked off No. 55 Michigan State, 6-1, Friday afternoon at the IU Varsity Courts. With the win, the Hoosiers move to 9-8 overall and 3-2 in Big Ten play, while the Spartans slip to 14-10 on the year and 1-5 in the conference.

After a limited week of practice due to injuries, IU coach Ken Hydinger was quick to thank the Hoosier medical staff for preparing his players for action.

"I really appreciate the work that Dr. (Dale) Dellacqua and (trainer) Wendy Poppy did for us," Hydinger said. "It was a great, gutsy performance. Guys really stepped up after limited practices."

The Hoosiers opened by sweeping the doubles matches to earn the valuable doubles point. IU's Ryan Recht and John Stone knocked off the Spartans' Andrew Formanczyk and Chris Mitchell, 9-7. At No. 2, Jakub Praibis and Dmytro Ishtuganov downed MSU's Cameron Marshall and Eric Simonton, 9-7. Finally, Ryan McCarthy and Neil Kenner downed Mike Brown and Michael Flowers, 8-3.

"That was huge," Hydinger said of the doubles performance. "Our No. 3 doubles have been on a tear, and No. 1 and No. 2 were down at the breaks but came back to pull it out. They showed a lot of heart."

In singles, Hydinger pointed to Recht, McCarthy and Tom Bagnato as the clutch performers.

At No. 2 singles, Recht avenged an earlier loss to Marshall by posting a 7-6 (3), 6-3 triumph. Bagnato clinched the IU triumph with a 6-3, 6-4 victory over Simonton. McCarthy posted a No. 6 singles victory with a 7-5, 6-4 win over Anthony Stefani.

"Recht lost to his guy last time, but today was the money match, and he won when it counted," Hydinger said. "Bagnato clinched the win for us, and McCarthy did not bat an eye to win in straight sets. Overall, everyone is competing well."

Hydinger hopes that his team maintains this momentum when it wraps up its weekend action with a home match, Saturday, April 10, against 50th-ranked Michigan. The match will begin at Noon and will be held at the IU Outdoor Tennis Courts.
