April 11, 2007
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Junior Thomas Richter was named the Big Ten men's tennis Athlete of the Week on Wednesday, April 11, after a 4-0 performance on the road in singles and doubles for the Hoosiers.
Richter becomes the second Hoosier to earn the honor this year. David Bubenicek was named Athlete of the Week on Jan. 17.
At No. 41 Wisconsin, the Indiana junior downed 2005 Big Ten indoor singles champion Nolan Polley, who is currently ranked 111th in the nation, in straight sets. Richter also teamed with Dara McLoughlin at No. 1 doubles for an 8-4 victory over the Badgers' Moritz Baumann and Lachezar Kasarov.
Against Northwestern on Sunday (April 8), the Hoosiers' top tandem posted an 8-4 defeat of Willy Lock and Matt Christian. At No. 1 singles, the unranked Richter continued his streak, taking out Lock (6-2, 6-4) to propel the 71st-ranked Hoosiers' to a 4-3 upset in conference action.
"Thomas went 4-0 against good competition this past weekend," head coach Ken Hydinger said. "He has been through a lot off the court, including the death of his father and the challenge of graduate level classes, and you can see how he's handling it. He has stepped up in big matches for us and is playing bigger and better."
The Hoosiers return home this weekend for matches against Illinois and Purdue. Indiana takes on the Illini on Saturday, April 14, at noon, and faces the Boilermakers on Sunday, April 15, at noon.
