Bloomington, IN-The 49th-ranked men's tennis won a huge match over Michigan State (8-10, 4-3 Big Ten) 5-2 today. After dropping the doubles point, the Hoosiers were able to win five out of the six singles matches.
The Hoosiers (11-7, 3-3 Big Ten) began the day as they have been recently by dropping the doubles point. The No. 3 team of Ian Arons and Ricardo Jordan continued to win by defeating Mark Finding and Trey Eubanks 8-3. However, they were the only team to win, as No. 1 and No. 2 lost. At No. 2, Milan Rakvica and Paul Jacobson lost to Ivica Primoral and Francisco Trinidad 6-2,7-5. In the deciding match for the doubles point, Gabriel Montilla and Rahman Smiley, the No. 1 team, fell in a close match against Chris Struck and Ken Kigongo 9-7
Indiana was able to bounce back from losing the doubles point today, by posting wins in five of the six singles matches. Rakvica and George McGill easily got past their opponents. At No. 4, Rakvica extended his winning streak to 13-matches with a win over Struck 6-0,6-0. At No. 3, McGill improved his record to 6-0 in the Big Ten with a win over Primoral 6-2,6-3. At No. 2, Montilla defeated Kigongo 7-6,6-3 to increase the Hoosiers lead over the Spartans to 3-1. The Hoosiers clinch the victory with Smiley's win over Mark Jacobson 6-4,0-6,6-1. The Hoosiers went on to split the final two singles matches. Paul Jacobson come back attempt at Trinidad was cut short, as he lost 6-2,7-5. At No. 1, Arons achieved a hard fought win over Eubanks 1-6,6-3,7-6.
Coach Hydinger, "I thought that we competed well. To lose the doubles point for the second match in a way and come back like that showed percistance and character...It was a big win for Rahman. He has been struggling a little bit lately and for him to clinch like that was great for him."
The Hoosiers will be on the road next weekend for two Big Ten matches. On Saturday, they will be in Champaign, Illinois for a match against 2nd-ranked Illinois at 1 p.m. They will then travel up-state on Sunday for a match against Northwestern in Evanston, Illinoins at noon.
