HOOSIERS HOST PENN STATE & NOTRE DAME
April 14, 1998 HOOSIERS HOST PENN STATE & NOTRE DAME
THIS WEEK: Indiana, 7-10 overall and 2-5 in the Big Ten, plays host to Penn State on Saturday and Notre Dame on Sunday. Both matches are scheduled for 2 p.m. Penn State enters the weekend at 8-10 overall and 0-7 in the Big Ten. Notre Dame, currently ranked 14th in the nation, is 14-6 overall. Notre Dame's Ryan Sachire is the 20th-ranked singles player while the doubles team of Brian Patterson and Jakub Pietrowski come in at 13th overall.
LAST WEEK: The Hoosiers hit some bumpy road on last weekend's trips to Purdue and Illinois. IU fell to the Boilermakers 6-1 and went scoreless in a 7-0 defeat at the hands of the sixth-ranked Illini. Freshman Paul Jacobson was Indiana's lone victor, winning at no. 6 singles, 1-6, 6-4, 7-6 over Purdue's Tushaar Gautam.
HELD HONORED: Andrew Held was recently named a Scholastic Achievement Award winner for his efforts in the classroom. The award is given annually to one athlete in each varsity sport to honor and acknowledge the academic excellence of the recipient. Held's name will be permanently displayed on a plaque in the north lobby of Assemly Hall as a reminder of the honor he has brought to Indiana through his outstanding performance both on the court and in the classroom.
LIPPITT LIGHTS 'EM UP: Junior Scott Lippitt was expected to step up for the Hoosiers this season. The former walk-on blossomed into a solid tennis player last season and has shown no signs of letting up in the early goings of this season. Lippitt has compiled a 18-16 record while playing mainly at number three. He has shown the ability to step up in the clutch, garnering eight victories at the one and two spots. In doubles, Lippitt has teamed with senior Andrew Held to lead the team with a 21-11 record. The duo has played together all season and defeated some tough opponents along the way.
A BRIGHT FUTURE: The future looks bright for coach Ken Hydinger and the Indiana men's tennis team. With only two seniors on the roster, Hydinger has featured a host of young talent throughout the season. Junior Scott Lippitt will be the only senior on next year's roster. He will be joined by sophomores George McGill and Gabriel Montilla, and a host of freshmen - Ian Arons, Joey Balsiger, Paul Jacobson, and Brenden Storey. All have been solid contributors this season.
HEAD COACH KEN HYDINGER: Hydinger is entering his 14th year at Indiana and is in his 19th year overall. In his 13 seasons at the helm of the Hoosiers he has compiled a record of 214-141-1 while earning a 280-186-1 record overall. Since taking over at Indiana in 1985, Hydinger has helped rebuild a struggling program and has led it back to national prominence. In the eight seasons following his arrival the Hoosiers averaged a 2nd place finish in what has been called one of the nation's toughest conferences. A graduate of Pepperdine University, Hydinger coached Southwest Missouri State to a 23-3 record in 1978 before coaching Mississippi State for four seasons.
ODDS AND ENDS: Freshman Ian Arons has won 10 of his last 13 singles matches...he leads the team with 21 singles victories...the duo of Andrew Held and Scott Lippitt lead the team with 21 doubles victories...the tandem has won 13 of their last 18 matches together...freshman Paul Jacobson has won 7 of his last 9 singles matches...Gabriel Montilla owns the longest doubles win streak...he won 11 straight contests between 2/6-3/21...freshman Brenden Storey has won 4 of his last 5 singles matches...the tandem of Montilla and Derek Pope has won 13 of its last 17 doubles matches...
ON THE HORIZON: Following this weekend's matches, the Hoosiers hit the road for a pair of Big Ten contests to close out the season. They travel to Iowa, April 25th, and Minnesota, April 26th. IU will then take part in the Big Ten Championships, April 30-May 3, held in Ann Arbor, Mich.
