April 15, 2000 Men's Tennis Defeats Ohio State For Fifth Straight Big Ten Victory
Bloomington, Ind. - The men's tennis team defeated 39th-ranked Ohio State 5-2 today. The win was the Hoosiers (14-4) fifth straight in the Big Ten and improved their record in the conference to 6-2. Ohio State (10-8) dropped to 4-3 in the conference.
The Hoosiers took the early 1-0 lead by sweeping all three doubles matches for the fifth straight match. Paul Jacobson and Rahman Smiley opened the day for the Hoosiers with a victory over Derek Delfaco and Bob Wellstein 8-1 at No. 3. Indiana clinched the doubles point as George McGill and Milan Rakvica defeated B.J. Monroe and Jon Scale 8-5 at No. 2. 35th-ranked Ian Arons and Gabriel Montilla, playing at No. 1, defeated 34th-ranked Andrew Carlson and Chris Porter 8-5.
In singles, Indiana won four of the six matches. Montilla, playing at No. 3, gave teh Hoosiers a 2-0 lead with a win over Vince Ng 6-4,6-1. At No. 1, 98th-ranked Rakvica increased the Hoosiers lead to 3-0 with a victory over Porter 6-1,6-0. At No. 4, McGill clinched the victory for the Hoosiers with a victory over Derek DeFalco 6-2,6-4. The Hoosiers lost the shutout when Jacobson was defeated by Wellstein 6-4,6-3. Smiley, playing at No. 6, defeated Scale in three sets 7-6,0-6,7-5. At No. 2, Arons was defeated by Phil Metz 5-7,6-3,6-3.
Head Coach Ken Hydinger said, "In doubles are guys played really well. Ohio State came back and fought hard. George McGill came through again. Gabriel Montilla came through again winning the second set big. That is the heart of our lineup. Milan Rakvica lost to (Chris) Porter two times before and this time beats him 6-1,6-0. That is big for Milan to do it. It was a good win for Rahman Smiley. After losing the second to win the match."
The Hoosiers will conclude their home season with tomorrow's
match against Penn State. The match will take place at the Indiana
University Varsity Courts and will begin at noon.
