    Gophers Get Hoosiers, 4-3

    BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The No. 56 Indiana men's tennis team fell 4-3 in Big Ten action to No. 55 Minnesota on Saturday afternoon at the IU Tennis Courts. The Hoosiers are now 10-10 on the year, while the Gophers improve to 7-10. Both squads are 4-3 in league play.

    "Minnesota played real well and got the job done", Indiana head coach Ken Hydinger said. "We had some opportunities, but we didn't get it done today. This is going to be a challenge for the team. We need to come back hard tomorrow for another Big Ten match."

    Indiana claimed the doubles point, but Minnesota captured four of the six singles contests on its way to the victory.

    The Gophers won the first tandem outing of the day, as freshman Adrien Debreyne and sophomore D.J. Geatz bested senior Ryan Recht and junior John Stone, 8-6, at the top slot.

    The Hoosiers even the paired competition with an 8-5 conquest from senior Jakub Praibis and junior Dmytro Ishtuganov at the No. 2 spot. The duo broke the serve of sophomores Nic Edlefsen and Raoul Schwark on three occasions en route to the win. The pair is now 18-5 overall and 16-4 in dual action.

    The Cream and Crimson secured the point after freshmen Michael McCarthy and Dara McLoughlin downed sophomores Sion Wilkins and Mikey Kantar at No. 3. Both teams held serve until the match was square at 7-7. With Minnesota serving in the 15th game, the IU twosome claimed four-straight points to earn the break, and held serve in the following game for the 9-7 win. McCarthy and McLoughlin notched their eight doubles win of the spring.

    In singles action, Stone gave the Hoosiers a 2-0 lead in the match with a straight-set, 6-4, 6-2, win over Kantar at No. 6. The Greenwood, Ind., native is 13-5 on the year and 10-3 in dual action.

    The Gophers trimmed the lead in half with a win from Debreyne, 6-3, 6-3, over Praibis, ranked 49th in the country, at the top position.

    Sophomore David Bubenicek pushed the lead to 3-1 as he rolled, 6-4, 6-3, against Edlefsen at No. 3. The Kromeriz, Czech Republic, product moved to 18-6 this year and 14-3 on the spring.

    Minnesota evened the match, 3-3, as Schwark upended McCarthy, 6-4, 6-4, at No. 4, and sophomore Brian Lipinski downed senior Tom Bagnato, 6-4, 6-4, at No. 5.

    The Gophers captured the affair as Geatz bested Recht, 1-6, 6-4, 7-5, at the No. 2 position.

    The Hoosiers will return to the courts on Sunday, April 17, for a Big Ten match against Iowa. The match is slated to begin at 11 a.m., and will be played on the IU Varsity Tennis Courts. It will be the last home match for the senior trio of Bagnato, Praibis and Recht.
