Hoosiers Swept by No. 33 Minn. (April 17, 2004)
BLOOMINGTON, Ind..--The No. 56 Indiana men's tennis team snapped its three-match winning streak after it fell to No. 33 Minnesota, 7-0 on Saturday afternoon at the IU Tennis Courts.
With the loss the Hoosiers slip to 10-9 on the campaign and 4-3 in Big Ten Play. Minnesota improves to 12-7 overall and 7-1 in conference play.
The Gophers took control early, earning the doubles point after Chris Wettengel/Andres Osorio defeated Ryan Recht/John Stone, 9-7 at No. 1 and Dusan Tabak/Brian Liponski downed Ryan McCarthy/Neil Kenner, 8-3. Dmytro Ishtuganov/Jakub Praibis were the only Hoosiers duo to pick up a win all afternoon as they took care of Clay Estes/Aleksey Zharinov. 8-2.
From then on, Indiana battled in singles, but came away unsuccessful as they dropped every match. The Hoosiers put up a tough fight as all but two of the matches went into three sets. After a shift in the line-up, Recht found himself playing at No. 1 for the second straight week and facing yet another ranked opponent. The match between Recht and 56th-ranked Wettengel was intense, but Wettengel eventually went on to win, 2-6, 6-3, 7-6 (8).
Head Coach Ken Hydinger was disappointed with the loss, but thought the Hoosiers put forth a great effort.
"We lost the match, but you have to give Minnesota credit," said Hydinger. "They are a good team. But all we can do now is get ready for out big match tomorrow with Iowa."
The Hoosiers will play their last home match of the season tomorrow, April 18 against Iowa. Match time is set for Noon and will be played at the IU Outdoor Tennis Courts.
