Send Seniors Out With Win
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The No. 56 Indiana men's tennis team sent seniors Tom Bagnato, Ryan Recht and Jakub Praibis out with a Big Ten win on Sunday afternoon at the IU Varsity Tennis Courts. Playing in their last home match, the Hoosiers bested Iowa, 6-1, and improved to 5-3 in conference action. With the win, the Cream and Crimson is now 11-10 on the year, while the Hawkeyes drop to 9-10 overall and 1-7 in league play.
"The guys came out, after a tough loss to Minnesota yesterday, and played hard," Indiana head coach Ken Hydinger said. "They played with discipline and got the job done."
Iowa won the first doubles match of the day as the team of freshmen J.P. Ritchie and Bart van Monsjou bested freshmen Michael McCarthy and Dara McLoughlin, 8-4, at No. 3.
The Hoosiers evened the tandem competition with a win from Praibis and junior Dmytro Ishtuganov at the No. 1 position. The IU twosome broke juniors Kyle Markham and Brett Taylor on two occasions en route to the win. It was the fourth time this spring that Praibis and Ishtuganov have played at the No. 1 slot; they are 2-2 in those outings. The duo improved to 19-5 overall and 17-4 on the spring.
The Cream and Crimson secured the doubles point as Recht and junior John Stone upended juniors Chaitu Malempati and Aaron Schaechterle at No. 2 by the score of 8-5. Recht and Stone jumped out to a 5-1 lead in the match, courtesy of breaks in games three and five. The Iowa duo fought back and won the next four games to even the affair at 5-5. Down 0-30 in game 11, the Hoosiers battled back and held serve to take a 6-5 lead in the contest. In the following game, that featured five deuce points, IU was able to break the Hawkeyes serve and grab a 7-5 lead. Recht's match-ending ace in the 13th game closed the door on Iowa and secured the lone tandem point for IU.
Indiana continued to roll in singles action, as Praibis, ranked 49th in the nation, bested Malempati, 6-0, 6-3, at the top position. The Litomerice, Czech Republic, product is 21-8 on the season and 17-4 in dual action. He pushed his conference ledger to 7-1.
"So many things have happen these last four years, but on the other hand, things have gone by quickly," Praibis said. "It is an interesting feeling right now, but as time goes on, I will have a better chance to reflect on my four years at Indiana."
Recht made the score 3-0 in favor of the Hoosiers, downing Markham at the No. 2 spot, 6-2, 6-2.
"It feels really good to get a win in my last time on these courts," Recht said. "I have some great memories from playing on these courts."
Stone secured the match at No. 6, with a 6-2, 6-4 straight-set win over sophomore Jonny Hoak. The Greenwood, Ind., product is now 11-3 this spring.
Bagnato earned a win in his final home match, 6-2, 6-3, over Taylor at No. 5. He is now 11-7 overall and 8-5 in dual matches.
"It was ideal to go out with a win today," Bagnato said. "I've had a lot of matches on these courts and its great to go out on a high note."
Sophomore David Bubenicek notched the sixth point for the Cream and Crimson with a three-set win over Ritchie, 1-6, 6-1, 6-3, at No. 4. The Kromeriz, Czech Republic, product is 15-3 this spring and 6-2 in conference play.
Indiana will be on the road for the final weekend of Big Ten action at No. 64 Michigan and at No. 75 Michigan State. The Hoosiers will face the Wolverines on Saturday, April 23, and the Spartans on Sunday, April 24. Both matches are slated to begin at noon.
