April 21, 1998 HOOSIERS ENTER LAST WEEK OF REGULAR SEASON
Match Data: The Indiana men's tennis team will close out the regular season this weekend with matches at Iowa, April 25th, and at Minnesota, April 26th. The Hoosiers enter the weekend with an 8-11 overall record and 3-5 mark in the conference. Iowa is currently 9-9 overall and 4-5 in the Big Ten while Minnesota is 8-11 overall and 4-5 in the conference.
A Look Back: The Hoosiers finally put an end to their five-match losing streak this past weekend by defeating Penn State 5-2. In the match, Indiana was victorious at No. 1, 2, 3, and 4 singles and took the doubles point by winning at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles. Indiana fell back in the loss column on Sunday with a 7-0 loss to 14th-ranked Notre Dame.
A Look Ahead: Following this weekend's matches, the Hoosiers will travel to Ann Arbor, Mich., April 30-May 3, for the Big Ten Championships.
Giant Killers: The No. 1 doubles team of Derek Pope and Gabe Montilla had struggled going into the weekend, losing three matches in a row. After defeating Penn State's tandem of Colin Smeeton and Marc Dorfman, the Hoosiers were to face the 13th ranked doubles team in the nation - Notre Dame's Jakub Pietrowski and Brian Patterson. Pope and Montilla were able to outlast the Irish duo 9-7, upping their mark to 14-8 overall.
20/20 Vision: Freshman Ian Arons is the only member of the squad to post 20 victories in singles play. Arons is currently 21-17 overall. With another victory, Scott Lippitt (19-17) will join his teammate in reaching the 20-win plateau. In doubles, both Andrew Held (21-11) and Scott Lippitt (22-12) have already surpassed 20 victories.
