George McGill Finishes Big Ten Season With 10-0 Record

Bloomington, IN--George McGill ended the season with a perfect 10-0 Big Ten record as the #48 Indiana Hoosiers defeated the Iowa Hawkeyes 6-1 today. With the win the Hoosiers clinched the fifth-seed and a first-round bye in next weekends Big Ten Championships.

The Hoosiers (14-8, 6-4) Big Ten) were once again dominant in doubles taking all three matches for the second straight day. At No. 1, Gabriel Montilla and Rahman Smiley defeated Jason Dunn and Ulf Jenter 8-5. McGill and Milan Rakvica, playing in their first Big Ten match together this year, were over Tyler Cleveland and Ben Bamsey 8-3, at the No. 2 position. At No. 3, Ian Arons and Ricardo Jordan won their match over J.R. Chidley and Girts Auskaps 8-6.

Indiana's singles play was also impressive, taking five of the six matches. Montilla, playing at the No. 2 position, defeated J.R. Chidley 6-1,6-3. After Arons loss to Cleveland 6-2,6-1 at the No. 1 position, the Hoosiers took the last four matches. Rakvica increased his winning streak to 17 matches with a 6-1,6-2 win over Petar Mandic, at No. 4. At No. 5, Jacobson clinched the victory for the Hoosiers with a win over Dunn 6-0,6-4. Smiley continued his great play the last three weeks with a win over Auskaps 6-4,6-4. McGill finished his perfect regular season and on a current nine match winning streak, with a win over Ulf Jenter 6-4,6-4.

Coach Hydinger said, "The guys did a great job today. We came into the weekend with our backs up against the wall. We needed to win both and we did. George played doubles for the first time (in the Big Ten) and he won his match. In singles, he finished with a 10-0 record in the Big Ten. We go into the Big Ten Championships. If we play a great three days we could win the Big Ten."

The Hoosiers will begin the Big Ten Championships on Friday with a match against either Minnesota or Purdue. The Big Ten Championships will take place in An Arbor, Michigan from Thursday, April 29 to Sunday, May 2.
