Hoosiers Set to Host Big Ten Tournament
April 28, 2010
The Hoosiers begin the postseason this weekend with the Big Ten Tournament. Indiana hosts this year's tournament and enters as the sixth seed. In the first round, IU will match up with the 11th-seeded Michigan State Spartans. The two teams will square off on Thursday, April 29 at 2:30 p.m. ET.
The Hoosiers took the regular season meeting 7-0 and lead the all-time series 54-19. The two teams have taken the courts against each other just four times in Big Ten Tournament play, and the Hoosiers are 3-1 in those matchups. The most recent Big Ten Tournament meeting with the Spartans came last season, when IU dismissed MSU 4-1. Michigan State has only won in Bloomington four times in the series history.
The winner of the first round tilt moves on to play the Michigan Wolverines. The Hoosiers closed out the regular season with a 5-2 loss to Michigan. The matchup proved to be closer than the score however, with several matches including third sets and tiebreakers. The Hoosiers are 2-3 all-time against Michigan in tournament play. The Wolverines have won the last three Big Ten tournament meetings between the two schools.
IU last hosted the tournament in 2000. The 2000 tournament saw Indiana enter as the three-seed and fall in the semifinals to two-seed Minnesota after a quarterfinal win over Ohio State. The Hoosiers finished the 2000 season with a trip to the NCAA Tournament.
