Bloomington, Ind. - Indiana tennis player senior Ryan Recht advanced to the quarterfinal round of the main singles draw at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) National Summer Championships. The Open is being held at the Varsity Tennis Center on the campus of Indiana University.

Recht, a No. 5-8 seed and finalist last year, defeated Chuck Perrin of Northwestern (6-1, 2-1 ret.) in the round of 16. The Fort Wayne, Ind., native will play Avery Ticer of Minnesota on Monday, Aug. 16, at 8:30 a.m.

Ticer, the third seed in the tournament, defeated Ross Wilson of Ohio State, 6-2, 6-4 to advance to the quarterfinals.

The top-seed, Joey Atas of Ohio State, moved on with a 2-6, 6-2, 1-0 (3) win, as did the second-seed, Eric Hechtman (6-4,6-3), over Kentucky's Matt Emery.

In men's doubles action, the duo of junior John Stone and Recht lost 8-5 to the team of Tyler Browne and Quinn Calderon.

The ITA National Summer Championships, presented by the United States Tennis Association (USTA), are the pinnacle of the ITA Collegiate Summer Circuit, which was played at 20 regional sites throughout the country last month. Over 15,000 men and women have competed in circuit events since it began in 1993. This is the 10th anniversary of the national championships, which were added to the circuit in '94.

The singles and doubles champions from the ITA National Summer Championships earn wild cards into the first national tournaments of the 2004-05 collegiate tennis season - the Icy Hot/ITA Men's and Riviera/ITA Women's All-American Championships in October (the finalists earn wild cards into the qualifying tournaments).
