Former Hoosier Praibis On ITF Circuit
Sept. 9, 2008
ENSCHEDE, Netherlands - Indiana alumnus Jakub Praibis had a successful summer on the International Tennis Federation Futures Circuit, highlighted by an appearance in the finals at the Czech Republic F2 Futures Tournament.
The native of Litomerice, Czech Republic won his semifinal match, defeating Andrej Martin of the Slovak Republic (7-5 6-3). In the final, Praibis fell to fellow Czech Karel Triska (4-6 6-7(4)). The two-time All-Big Ten (2004 and 2005) and three-time Academic All-Big Ten selection made it to the semifinals of the Belgium F1 Futures event and the quarterfinals of two more Futures tournaments as well.
"Jakub had recent success on the IU men's tennis team and now he is out there doing very well at the professional level. It opens the door as far as what our guys believe they can do, and it opens the doors for the future for our tennis players. I think what he is doing changes the mindset with our guys on what they can do in the future," said head coach Randy Bloemendaal.
Bloemendaal added, "We've had many players play professionally, but with a recent player doing it now, it is right there in front of our guys. It shows that if we work hard and continue this program playing at the Big Ten level, we can go out and be successful at the professional level."
The Hoosiers begin their fall slate on Friday, Sept. 12, with the Hoosier Invitational, which will see players from nine other teams compete at the IU tennis complex. The tournament will run through Sunday, Sept. 14. For complete coverage of Indiana University men's tennis, stay tuned to www.IUHoosiers.com.
