September 24, 1999 HOOSIERS OPEN SEASON WITH FIRST ROUND AT NOTRE DAME
Notre Dame, Ind.--The men's tennis team started tournament competition today with the Notre Dame Invitational. The Hoosiers competed in singles and doubles in first round competition.
In singles, senior Gabriel Montilla picked up the Hoosiers only win. Playing in the Flight A draw, Montilla defeated Indiana State's Gareth Keating 6-1,6-0. He will now play Michigan's Henry Beam tomorrow in the Quarterfinals.
In another match in Flight A, junior Paul Jacobson lost to Notre Dame's Casey Smith 6-2,6-1. Tomorrow, Jacobson will play Stefan Him in the First Round of Consolation play.
In Flight B, sophomore Ari Widlansky lost his opening round match to Purdue's Carl McCafferty 6-2,6-4. Widlansky will take part in tomorrow's consolation play against Michigan's Brad MacFarland.
In doubles, the pair of Widlansky and Jacobson lost to Henry Choi and Stefan Hirn 8-5. Tomorrow they will play Northwestern's Jackie Jenkins and Joast Hol in the Consolation round.
The Hoosiers will resume play tomorrow for Notre Dame, Indiana with Quarterfinals
and Consolation play.
