CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. - Indiana senior Ryan Recht and junior John Stone opened the 2004 fall season for the men's tennis team on Monday at the Icy Hot/ITA Men's All-American Championships at the Champions Club.

Recht lost in the first round of qualifying singles, 6-3, 6-2, to Marty Steigwardt of Florida. Stone and Recht combined for doubles action and fell to Virginia's Somdev Der Varman and Treat Huey, 8-4, in the qualifying round.

IU senior Jakub Praibis, ranked 23rd in the preseason Intercollegiate Tennis Association singles poll, will be one of the 64-players in the tournament's main draw. His match will be on Thursday, Oct. 7, but his opponent and time of match have yet to be determined and will be announced on Wednesday.

The showcase dates for this year's tournament are Oct. 7-10, which will feature the nation's top collegiate men's players (qualifying tournaments take place Oct. 1-6). All told, 46 of the top 50 players in the preseason ITA singles rankings are competing in this year's main draw.

The Icy Hot/ITA Men's All-American Championship is not only the largest single tournament in collegiate tennis, with over 350 competitors, but also the first of three national championship events during the 2004-05 season at the NCAA Division I level.
