    ITA Main Draw Opens

    ANN ARBOR, Mich. - Indiana tennis player freshman Michael McCarthy advanced to the main draw of the Intercollegiate Midwest Regional Championships with a pair of wins in the qualifying round on Friday, Oct. 22. The Cincinnati, Ohio, native defeated Karol Zarucki of Illinois-Chicago (6-4, 6-3) and Stefan Naughton of Louisville (6-1, 7-5) to advance to Saturday's 64- man singles bracket.

    McCarthy, now 6-0 on the fall season, is one of eight players from the qualifying round to advance to the main draw (Oct. 23-26.). McCarthy will duel with Parker Ross of Butler in the first round.

    Junior Dmytro Ishtuganov just missed qualifying for the main draw falling, 7-6 (6), 6-1, to Willy Lock of Northwestern. The Kiev, Ukraine, product won his first match of the day, 6-3, 6-1, over Ohio State's Dominic Ozanne.

    Seniors Jakub Praibis, No. 23 in the ITA preseason singles rankings, and Ryan Recht, along with junior Neil Kenner, have already secured spots in the 64-player main draw singles bracket beginning on Saturday at 8 a.m.

    Praibis, the top-seeded player in the tournament and one of sixteen seeded players, will face Andrew Roth of Notre Dame. Roth garnered one of the eight qualifying spots. Kenner will battle No. 15 Stephen Bass of Notre Dame, while Recht tangles with No. 14 Damar Johnson of Louisville.

    The first matches of the doubles bracket began on Friday afternoon with all three IU squad's claiming victories.

    Praibis and Ishtuganov, No. 55 in the preseason ITA doubles rankings, downed Notre Dame's Barry King and Sheeva Parbhu (8-5). Recht and John Stone bested Elliott Bisnow and Jeremy Sonkin of Wisconsin (8-5), while Ryan McCarthy and his brother Michael defeated Sam Davidson and Mark Henderson from DePaul (8-3).
