On Tap: Six Hoosiers will travel to East Lansing, Michigan, this weekend to compete in the Rolex Regional Championships. Sophomores Ian Arons, Joey Balsiger and Milan Rakvica, along with junior Gabriel Montilla, will compete in singles and doubles competetion. Freshman Rahman Smiley will compete in doubles and sophomore Brendan Storey may make the trip as a singles player. Depending on the health of the rest of the Hooisers players, the Indiana Davis Cup Invitational may start on Friday and end Sunday.
Fighting Illini Invite: The Hoosiers had their best showing of the young season two weeks ago at the Fighting Illin Invite. Juniors Gabriel Montilla and Ricardo Jordan, along with sophomores Paul Jacobson and Milan Rakvica, all were first-place finishers in their respective position. The other three singles players, sophomores Ian Arons, Joey Balsiger and Brendan Storey all finished in second-place. In doubles, the team of Storey and Jordan finished in second-place and the team of Rakvica and Jacobson finished in third-place.
Sophomores: Strong play by the sophomores has been a key to Hoosiers success through the first two tournaments. Paul Jacobson and Milan Rakvica, both have perfect 8-0 records in singles competetion and are 7-1 as a doubles team. Ian Arons, playing at the number one singles position, has a 4-3 record, but came on strong at the Fighting Illini Invite, winning three out of four matches. Joey Balsiger has a 6-2 singles record and Brendan Storey has a 4-3 singles record.
Recapping Last Year: The Hoosies are trying to bounce back after a disspointing season last year. Playing teams in the top 75 all season long, the Hoosiers ended the season with a 9-15 overall record. In conference play, they with a record of 4-9. They finished the Big Ten Championships in 8th place.
Head Coach Ken Hydinger... is entering his 15th season as the Head Coach at Indiana University. He has accumulated a 219-148-1 overall record, while he earning a 98-75 Big Ten record. He has been coaching at the colligiate level for 18 years, coaching at Mississippi State and Southwest Missouri State, before coming to Indiana. During his 18 years of coaching he has collecting 285 victories, with 193 losses and one tie.
Scouting Report: Without a senior on the team this year, the Hoosiers will be looking for leadership from Juniors George McGill and Gabriel Montilla. Montilla finished last year with a 18-19 singles record, while playing at the number 2 position. McGill finished with a 13-10 singles record, and will looked at to contribute more this year. Sophomore Ian Arons lead the Hoosiers in victories last year with 23. In doubles, the team does not have any teams returning from last year. They will look for stability from Montilla and fellow Junior Ricardo Jordan.
