November 7, 1998 Doubles Advance At ITA Regional Championships
East Lansing, Mich.-The Hoosiers continued with the second day of the ITA Regional Championships today with action in both singles and doubles. The championships, which are taking place on the campus of Michigan State University in East Lansing, Michigan include the best college players in the Midwest Region. The Hoosiers two doubles teams played strong as the advanced in doubles today.
In singles, 17th-seeded sophomore Ian Arons lost in the third round to top-seeded Ryan Sachire of Notre Dame 6-3,6-3.
In doubles, both of Indiana's teams advanced to the third round. Junior Gabriel Montilla and freshman Rahman Smiley defeated the 10th-seeded Western Michigan team of of Steve Pillon and Ryan Tomlinson 8-6. They will face the 8th-seeded Cris James and Jason Marshall of Purdue next. Indiana's other team of Arons and sophomore Milan Rakvica defeated Eastern Illinois' Baker and Cook 8-3 to advance to the third round. They will play the 2nd-seeded Jeff Laski and Gavin Sontag of Illinois next.
Action will continue tomorrow from South Bend, Indiana tomorrow with
doubles action for Indiana.
