Bubenicek, McLoughlin Advance at Big Ten Singles Championship
Nov. 11, 2006
"We are playing better matches as we go on," head coach Ken Hydinger said.
Bubenicek beat Juan Gomez of Northwestern, 6-1, 6-2 before downing Michael Flowers of Michigan State, 6-4, 6-0.
"David had a good result today, he has his best tennis ahead of him," Hydinger said.
McLoughlin also had two wins on the day, defeating John Allare of Michigan State in a hard-fought three-set match, 7-6, 4-6, 7-6
"Dara started loosening up and played better as he went on," Hydinger said.
Several other players also had solid results for Indiana. Senior Arnaud Roussel defeated Eric Hodgeman of Purdue, 6-3, 6-4 in his opening round. Sophomore Peter Antons opened the tournament with a 7-5, 6-3 victory over Griff Nienberg of Purdue, who Antons had lost to at the Hoosier Invitational. Both players would fall in their second round matches.
Sophomore Mak Kendall fell in his only match of the day, and will compete in the consolation draw. He lost to Justin Kronauge of Ohio State, 6-0, 6-2.
"Peter beat a guy from Purdue that he lost to two weeks ago, which is great. Mak played more consistently than he has before. Arnaud had a good win, playing a high player for Purdue," Hydinger said.
The Championships continue through Monday, Nov. 13. Complete results will be posted on IUHOOSIERS.com at the end of each day.
