Ann Arbor, Mich. In the first day of the Big Ten Singles championships, three Hoosiers advanced to the round of 32, Friday in Ann Arbor, Mich.
Neil Kenner downed his opponent, David Anving of Michigan, 6-3,7-5. No. 9-16 seed Ryan Recht advanced after defeating Walter Valarezo, of Iowa 6-2,6-2. Finally, David Bubenicek topped Ryan Berger of Penn State, 6-2,6-1 to advance.
John Stone, Dmytro Ishtuganov, Tom Bagnato and Ryan McCarthy also competed in singles, but each fell to their opponents. Stone fell to No. 1 seed Michael Rubin of Michigan, 6-2,6-2. McCarthy lost to Avery Ticer of Minnesota, 6-2,6-1. Ishtuganov fell to No. 7 seed Chris Wettengel of Minnesota, 7-6,6-2 and Bagnato lost a tough battle to Ahmed Wahla of Northwestern, 5-7, 6-3, 6-4.
The round of 32 will begin tomorrow with the first matches set for 8:00 a.m.
Singles action will also continue with a consolation bracket beginning tomorrow. Stone is set to face Eric Simonton of Michigan State. McCarthy will square off against Anthony Stefani, also of Michigan State. Ishtuganov will face Bradley Hunter of Penn State and Bagnato will take on Malcolm Scatliffe of Penn State
