The 2005 National Assistant Coach of the Year, Wayne Pate begins his ninth year with the Indiana track and field program. He was promoted to interim head coach at the start of the 2006-07 season.
Serving as associate head coach beginning with the 2004 season, Pate is a veteran track and field coach and former IU athlete. He trains IU's horizontal jumpers and high jumpers, including former IU standout Aarik Wilson, who claimed two NCAA Indoor titles and four Big Ten crowns under Pate's instruction.
Pate, who also received the National Assistant Coach of the Year award in 2003, has turned the jumpers on the women's side into the conference's and one of the nation's premier group. Former IU jumper Rose Richmond became the second female Olympian in school history. She competed in the long jump at the 2004 Olympics in Athens, Greece. With the help of Pate, Richmond also won the 2002 Big Ten outdoor title and earned All-America honors in addition to claiming the 2003 Big Ten indoor crown and 2003 indoor All-America recognition. She was, most recently, the USA Outdoor Champion in the long jump during the 2006 championships.
Also during the 2006 season, Pate guided junior Kyle Jenkins to a fourth-place finish in the triple jump at the NCAA Outdoor Championships in June, as he became the third straight outdoor All-American in the triple jump for IU and the fifth in five years for the Hoosiers. Jenkins also earned All-Big Ten Second Team honors after finishing runner-up at outdoor championships. Senior Kiwan Lawson has also excelled under Pate's instruction. Lawson qualified for NCAA Championships as a junior in the long jump with a team- and personal-best mark of 7.75m (25-5.24).
In 2001, Indiana grabbed both the indoor and outdoor long jump conference titles for the first time since 1994 and had their first outdoor All-American in the event since 1993.
On the men's side, Pate has led the Hoosiers to a position of conference dominance and national prominence. In 2003, Wilson swept the Big Ten indoor and outdoor triple jump and long jump championships. Wilson was the runner-up in the triple jump and an All-American in the long jump at the 2003 NCAA championships. He went on to advance to the finals at the USA Track and Field Championships, taking fourth. The year prior, Pate coached Wilson to 2002 Big Ten Freshman of the Year honors. Wilson won the league's outdoor triple jump title and finished second in the nation at the NCAA outdoor championships. Wilson also earned All-America honors for his fourth-place indoor finish in 2002.
Indiana claimed both the 2000 indoor and outdoor Big Ten triple jump titles, had an indoor All-American in 1999 in the triple jump for the first time since 1985 and had an outdoor All-American in 2000 in the triple jump for the first time since 1980.
Pate graduated from Indiana in 1981 with a bachelor's in Physical Education. As a member of the IU track and field team, Pate was a two-time Big Ten champion in the long jump and also competed in the high jump and 100m dash and was a member of the 4x100m Big Ten Championship relay team. While finishing his degree, Pate served as an assistant coach for the Indiana women's gymnastics program.
Following graduation, Pate became the assistant track and field coach at the University of Tennessee for four years and coached two NCAA runners-up in the triple jump. He then was an assistant coach at the University of Texas for seven years. While at Texas, he coached two-time NCAA long jump champion and former NFL running back Eric Metcalf and three-time NCAA high jump champion James Lott.
Pate spent three years at Murray State as the head men's and women's track and field and cross country coach and also spent three seasons as an assistant coach at Purdue. While at Murray State, he was named Ohio Valley Conference Coach of the Year.
A native of LaPorte, Ind., Pate is married to the former Laura Mozingo, the 1985 Southeastern Conference high jump champion while at Tennessee. They have a daughter, Charlize and a son, Justin.
