BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The Indiana men's and women's track and field teams combined for an impressive 16 first-place finishes at the Hoosier Classic on Jan. 14 at Gladstein Fieldhouse.

"Overall, it was a very good meet for us," Indiana director of track and field Randy Heisler said. "It was a great opportunity for our kids to run and get experience without really high intensity. We knew this would not be a huge meet, but we are very thankful for all the athletes that came out today. With so many home meets this season and an important team meet next weekend against Purdue and Ohio State, we needed to accomplish a lot today, and we did. This weekend, our team showed much more of a competitive effort and higher intensity which is exactly what we need with some tougher meets right around the corner."

The IU women notched seven top finishes, while the men recorded nine. Additionally, an astounding 20 Hoosiers nabbed personal best results at the season's second meet.

"The men turned in a lot of good performances today," Heisler said. "David (Neville) had another solid meet. Marcus (Thigpen) ran well today too. Stephanos (Ioannou) in the 60m hurdles was outstanding again. The men were overall a lot more competitive this meet than last. Our young guys like Jeff Coover keep getting better and better and that is what we were looking for this weekend."

Indiana swept the competition in both the men's and women's 60m hurdles. Courtney Johnson took home the title with a time of 8.56, while Stephanos Ioannou was clocked at 7.96 for the first-place finish. Stacey Clausing and Treymayne Warfield both notched event-best times in the 400m. Clausing recorded a new personal best time of 54.87, and Warfield crossed the line in 49.79.

In the 600m, the Hoosiers topped the competition as well. Doug Dayhoff finished first with a time of 1:22.71, and teammate Lauren Keefe took the victory with a mark of 1:34.06. Keefe's time eclipsed her pervious personal best mark of 1:37.57 set on Feb. 26, 2005.

Both Candice Perry and Kiwan Lawson claimed victories in the long jump. Perry dominated her competitors with a leap of 5.95m (19-6.25), and Lawson won with a 7.11m (23-4.00) mark.

Both IU teams recorded first-place marks in the pole vault and the 4x400m relay. In only his second meet as a Hoosier, Jeff Coover notched a win with a leap of 5m (16-4.75), while Jamie Raklau was marked at 3m (9-10.00) in her second pole vault title of the season. Coover's jump was .25m higher than his jump at last week's Hoosier Open, making this meet's mark his new personal best. Raklau also etched a new best mark under her name. Her 3m (9-10.00) vault surpassed her old best of 2.82m (9-3.00) set last weekend as well. The Indiana A women's and men's relay team recorded wins for the second straight meet. The Indiana A women's relay team made up of LaDonna Ray, Caitlin Lauer, Michele Huber and Clausing finished with an event-best time of 3:52.10. Warfield, Leon Brown, Dayhoff and Neville combined to form the Indiana A men's relay team that took first with a time of 3:17.06.

Neville, who earned the Big Ten's Co-Athlete of the Week honor last week for his performance in the 400m, finished first in the 200m this meet with a mark of 21.34. Teammate Marcus Thigpen throttled the competition in the 60m dash with a winning time of 6.87. In the women's weight thrown, Andrea Dalla Rosa picked up her second weight thrown victory with an event-best hurl of 15.82m (51-11.00).

The Indiana track and field teams are back in action for their third-consecutive home meet on Jan. 21 at noon against Ohio State and Purdue.
